Signs a property may need rewiring
Age alone doesn't condemn an installation. Plenty of 1970s and 80s wiring is in sound condition.
- Rubber, fabric or lead-sheathed cable — these predate modern PVC and degrade with age
- Round-pin sockets, or very few sockets per room
- A rewireable-fuse board with no RCD protection
- Black or brown rubber cable visible in the loft or under floors
- An EICR returning multiple C2 observations across several circuits
- No earth to lighting circuits — common in installations from the 1960s and earlier
Full or partial
A full rewire replaces every circuit in the property. A partial rewire replaces the circuits that need it — often the lighting, or the upstairs, or just the kitchen — and keeps sound cabling in place.
Planning the work
A full rewire is disruptive: floorboards up, chases cut into walls, power off in sections. Most people either move out for the week or live in the half we're not working on.

How long does a rewire take?
It depends on the size of the property and whether it's occupied. We give you a realistic schedule with the quote, not an optimistic one.
Do I need to move out?
Not necessarily. Many people stay, and we work in stages so there's always power somewhere.
Will you make good the walls?
We keep chasing and lifting to the minimum needed and leave the work ready for a plasterer and decorator. We'll be clear in the quote about exactly where the finish line sits.
Can you rewire a listed or period property?
Yes — sensitive routing in older properties is routine work around here. Listed buildings may need consent for certain works, which we'll flag before work starts.
